AG informs Supreme Court that Data Protection Bill is prepared for introduction in Monsoon Session amidst WhatsApp case
India's Attorney General, R. Venkataramani, announced during a hearing challenging WhatsApp's latest privacy policy that a new Data Protection Bill will be introduced in the Monsoon Session of Parliament in July 2023. The Bill will address the concerns raised in the present petitions. The Bench directed the registry to place the matter before the Hon'ble CJI to constitute a new Constitution Bench in August 2023. The Solicitor General informed the Bench that the Data Protection Bill introduced in Parliament had been withdrawn, and a comprehensive Bill was underway. The hearing was adjourned until February 2023, and WhatsApp was instructed to widely publicize that users in India do not have to accept its 2021 privacy policy to use it.
